Master of Music in Choral Conducting

Description

The Master of Music degree with an emphasis in choral conducting is designed to give the student advanced training in choral conducting and score study and prepares students for study at the doctoral level.

Course Requirements

Requirements for the M.M. degree with emphasis in choral conducting are as follows (33 Hours):

Mus 613-Directed Individual Study in Choral Music 3
Mus 616-Advanced Conducting 3
Mus 695-Public Recital 2

 

Other Academic Requirements
In addition to course work, students must complete a thesis or recital and must pass a final oral or written comprehensive examination.

I. Recital

A.)  A student must be in full standing to enroll in Mus 695 (Recital).
B.)  Students must be enrolled for at least 3 hours during the semester in which they intend to graduate.

II.  Comprehensive Examination

A.)  Early in the semester in which the student intends to graduate, the major professor, in consultation with the student, shall formulate a committee of graduate music faculty members to administer the oral exam.
B.)  The committee must be formulated prior to the recital so that the members may attend.

Audition Requirements

  1. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree in music.
  2. Applicants must make application to the University of Mississippi Graduate school.   https://apply.olemiss.edu/graduate/
  3. Applicants must submit a resume/vita to the Music Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Rhonda Hackworth at rshackwo@olemiss.edu
  4. Applicants must submit a video audition to include 10 minutes (minimum) of rehearsal work with a choir and 10 minutes of concert video to Dr. Donald Trott at dtrott@olemiss.edu
  5. Applicants do not have to take the GRE.

Graduate Assistantships in Choral Music

The University of Mississippi Department of Music offers paid assistantships to qualifying graduate students, including in the area of Choral Music. If you are interested, please complete the application form, below, and email it to Dr. Rhonda Hackworth, Graduate Program Coordinator, at rshackwo@olemiss.edu.

Applications submitted by April 1st will receive priority consideration.  After April 1st, assistantships will be awarded only if positions are still available.
